Internet connections: Phone line, Cable, DSL or Wireless?

For homes, the fastest connections are through Cable and DSL, we prefer Cable in the NYC metro area.

Cable: Ask the cable provider in your area about high-speed/broad band connections. Cable providers often run a special rate for your first 3 to 6 months

DSL: Ask your landline phone company about DSL networking in your area. Your computers require ethernet or USB for DSL connections. Ethernet is BETTER. As with cable, you may find special rates for the first 3 to 6 months.

Phone lines: These traditional connections are slower but if you just check emails or use the internet occasionally they are adequate and cost less.

Satellite: Internet connections that are faster than 53kbd phone connections are available through satellite providers in rural areas with no cable or DSL generally at a premium price.

Wireless: Connecting requires a wireless networking card in PCs or an airport card in Macs. You also need an internet access point/base station using any of the above connection methods toble to access the web or alternately logon using someone elses accesspoint/base station found in most Starbucks coffee houses. (great marketing!)

Cell phones: There are methods to link your computer to your cell phone by wireless means for internet access. Also cell phones are capable of surfing the web and sending email/text messages.
