Monitors and Printers
CRT monitors are cheaper now for the most part, use at least a 17 inch (measured diagonally) screen and remember to adjust the brightness and contrast properly ( Adobes Photoshop as well as many computer OS's have monitor calibration capabilities.
The new ultra-slim LCD ( Liquid Crystal Display ) screens use less power than comparably sized CRT monitors and their prices continue to plummet each passing year. Some guide lines for a good 17/19" diagonal measured LCD screen are listed below
LCD PANEL of 17" diagonal (optimum resolution may be at 1280x1024).
Contrast Ratio 500:1
Viewing Angles 160° horizontal, 160° vertical
Response Time 8~16 ms, lower is better.
Brightness 250~300 cd/m2, higher being better comparison for the same size screen only
Glass surface ideally should be Anti-glare
Video inputs come as analog, digital/ DVI
It's not really that important to use a DVI (digital visual interface) unless you're doing work that requires superb image quality, such as graphic design or photograph manipulation.
Most LCD displays use an analog VGA connector like traditional CRT monitors and as such will be compatable with your computer, there are units having both analog and digital.
Which printer - Ink jet, Laser or photo printer?
To function at their best all printers require maintenance and cleaning . Plan your budget to allow for the the cost in inks and paper, which soon adds up.
If you print documents all day you may find the best solution is a laser monochrome (B/W) printer. They are sturdy, the ink is crisp and long lasting and they offer professional looking documents. How many pages you print per day against a printer's capacity will help you choose correctly. The laser toner cartridges used in black and white laser printers are by far the most economical.
If you print under 10 color documents a day, the inkjet printers maybe suitable but you do pay dearly for manufacturer inks. With some newer printers you have to replace all the ink cartridges, not just the color that ran out. If you do not use the printer often, you may encounter clogged ink heads from ink drying out, it's less expensive to buy a new printer than to have it serviced for the most part.
If you print mostly color images, photos, and cards, then a photo printer is your best choice. However you might want to check the price and quality against that of developing the digital images at your local photo shop, or buying a color laser which are so much affordable today than even a year ago.
If you print a large volume of color as well as black and white documents, a professional laser printer from a well known manufacturer is your best answer.
